All OFY employees are familiar with the OFY mantra; it is posted in the hallway, four phrases printed in a bold font and hanging in four simple frames:
YOU ARE HERE FOR A REASON.
YOU ARE HERE TO SERVE.
DON’T UNDERESTIMATE YOUR IMPACT ON OTHERS.
IT’S NOT ABOUT YOU.
But these signs are not just a decoration; they resonate in the hearts and actions of all OFY employees. I would like to share what these words mean to me as an OFY employee.
I’ve been an Administrative Assistant for 6 years at OFY but my history with OFY stretches back into my teen years. My mother worked at OFY and I got hired as support staff during various summer breaks to help with clerical projects. After completing my degree in Theatre, I found myself unsure of my future plans and was welcomed back at OFY in a part time Administrative Assistant position. It was in this position that I realized I had found my home in the non-profit arena. Some days working in a non-profit agency is comparable to weeding through a jungle of paperwork that could dull even the most powerful machete. Beyond that paperwork however is action, something I get to see every day at OFY. When I see the commitment to the well being of others that is displayed by my coworkers, I am equally inspired in my own work. From making 30 copies of a new form to gathering resources to distribute to families or even organizing donations, no task is too trite if it is a means for me to assist all OFY employees in providing the best services to children and families.
I feel that I am very lucky to work for an organization whose belief system correlates with my own values. It is important to me and that is why I am at OFY and why I work diligently to support not only my coworkers, but also the families and children for which OFY provides services. I am here for a reason. I am here to serve. I am here FOR YOU.
